With time, before and after the 2014 elections, there have been many allegations by opposition leaders(Mostly Congress) accusing BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi of trying to buy the Media. Congress even accused Modi of having close ties with Mukesh Ambani( India's richest man and owner of Reliance) who recently bought the Network 18 group for Rs. 4000 cr.
Though I agree there may be some truth in these allegations because there's no fire without smoke, one thing struck my mind. If the BJP can buy the media, why couldn't the corrupt Congress who's been in power for most of the time period after the Independence, buy the media?
I decided to do some research. I tried finding out if Congress owns any media houses, though I had already heard from friends talking about how Congress owns that newspaper or that news channel.
Here are some facts:-
1. Shobhana Bhartia, who is the owner Editorial Director of Hindustan Times, one of the leading newspapers of the India, is a Congress member and has close ties with the Gandhi family. She was also a Congress MP from Rajya Sabha from the year 2006-12.
2. Vinod Sharma, Hindustan Times Political Affairs Editor, can be seen on various TV panel discussions as a Congress spokesperson.
3. Radhika Roy, wife of Prannoy Roy, NDTV's promoters: Radhika's sister Brinda Karat is a famous CPM leader and Brinda's husband Prakash Karat too, top CPM politician. CPM has always been a Congress supporter.
4. Sonia Singh, wife of Former Union Minister R.P.N. Singh, a member of Congress works for NDTV.
5. There have been reports of J & K CM Omar Abdullah dating Nidhi Razdan, a famous NDTV journalist.
6. P. Sainath, who was associated with The Hindu for so many years, is the nephew of Congress politician V. Shankar Giri and the grandson of V. V. Giri, famous Congress politician and Former President of India.
7. Rajiv Shukla, top Congress politician and MP from Rajya Sabha owns the Hindi news channel News24.
I mean why not first look under your sleeves? I mean why throw stones when you yourself live in a house made of glass? I may or may not be accusing the Congress party of using these influences but then there's no smoke without fire, right?
